Skinny Cow Candy

Skinny Cow ice cream has been around for a while and I think it’s pretty darn good so I was curious as to how their new line of candies would taste. The Skinny Cow candies are made by Nestle so I figure that I’d find some similarities in taste and quality to those Nestle candies I already like. The idea is that these are calorie-counted candies so that you know how much you are eating in one sitting.

Heavenly Crisp Bar: Milk Chocolate

The Heavenly Crisp Bar is a combination of crispy wafers and a chocolate crème covered in milk chocolate. It looks like a big Kit Kat Bar except that it’s a little crispier and the chocolate coating is much thinner than a Kit Kat. As far as taste goes, the milk chocolate is decent and the combination of the crisp wafers with the crème is pretty good. It’s a good chocolate candy but nothing really makes it stand out for me. Although, at 110 calories, it’s a pretty satisfying treat.

Dreamy Clusters

The Dreamy Clusters are a combination of crispy rice and caramel coated in milk chocolate. It’s basically like mixing a Nestle Crunch Bar with caramel. The caramel is thick and chewy and goes nice with the crisp texture of the rice. And of course, the chocolate rounds out the taste real well. You get about 4 crisps in each bag for 120 calories. For me, it’s just enough to get that craving taken care of.

If you’re watching your calories or are on Weight Watchers (they are Weight Watchers approved) then these are a pretty good way to satisfy your chocolate cravings and your sweet tooth. You get a decent amount of product for the amount of calories. However, as far as taste goes, these didn’t really stand out to me as anything different from what’s already on the market.

Editor’s note: I tried both also and thought both were very good, especially given the calorie count. I actually thought the Dreamy Clusters were delicious and would not have known they were low cal unless I was told (or read the label or saw they were called Skinny Cow).

Candy Review: Soda Can Fizzy Candy

Soda Can Fizzy Candy 6-Pack

As I was waiting in CVS one day for a prescription to be filled I wandered around the store. I had about 20 minutes to kill and there’s not much else to do in CVS but look around. That’s when I found this little six pack of Soda Can Frizzy Candy. The six-pack is a cute little novelty and there are four flavors: lemon-lime, cola, orange and grape.

There’s actually a little plastic pop top on each can that you have to pop open to get the candy, which is kind of neat. The candies look like Tart N Tinys (remember those?) but in paler colors based on the flavor. They have almost the same texture too but are softer to chew.

Soda Can Fizzy Candy Open Can

These are not fizzy like pop rocks or some of the powdered candy that’s out there but they do pack a punch. The Lemon-Lime flavor was almost too tart and too strong on the fizziness. You don’t get the fizzy feeling until you start to chew the candy but it’s there trust me. The grape reminded me exactly of grape soda flavor. The fizz in the grape flavor is there but not as pronounced as with the lemon-lime. The orange was not a great flavor but this one fizzed on contact in my mouth. The cola honestly didn’t taste much like cola, it was actually kind of gross. I’ve certainly tasted much better cola flavored candies.

This six-pack of Soda Can Fizzy Candy is cute, but definitely not a worthwhile soda flavored candy (though the cans are cute and worth keeping). It’s a great little novelty item, but the flavors need to be improved and the fizz needs to be consistent. Seriously, don’t waste your money on this one. If you really love your soda flavored candy, I recommend sticking to Wonka Bottlecaps (which I LOVE)!

Candy Review: Beer Taffy

Beercandy Stout and IPA Taffy

Right before Father’s Day, I had posted about Beercandy and how it would make a great gift for Dads everywhere. I mentioned in that post that I was planning to order some of their products for my beer loving husband for Father’s Day. After all, what could be better for a beer-loving guy? Well, I spoke true and now I can tell you all about their Beer Taffy. I would have also reviewed the Beer Caramels, but sadly, since it was a Father’s Day gift after all, they were consumed before I could taste the. I had asked him for some details that I could include in the review but all he could tell me was that they were the best caramels he ever had.

If you are expecting that the Beer Taffy is going to be a sweet piece of chewy taffy with just a hint of beer flavor, like I did, then you’ll be in for a surprise. It’s nothing at all like I expected. If you like your taffy thick and chewy, then you’ll be very pleased. It literally took me 5 minutes to chew one of these. Your mouth will definitely get some exercise.

If you like the taste beer, then you’re going to love this candy. There are only two beers used to make the taffies, IPA and Stout. Both the IPA and the Stout taffy were equally strong in flavor, even though Stout is a normally a much stronger beer. There’s not much sweetness to this taffy, just enough to qualify them as candy, but the main flavor is beer. The best way I can describe this candy is “chewable beer”.

So, if you’re a beer lover and a taffy lover, you’ll really enjoy this candy. It’s a great combination of both handcrafted beers and candy. I like a good beer myself every now or then but to me it was strange to chew some beer rather than drinking it down. Then again, there’s no cans or bottles to worry about, you won’t need a beer cozy to keep it cool, and you sure don’t need a bottle opener!

Candy Review: Jolly Rancher Fruit Chews

Jolly Rancher Fruit Chews

I grew up spending ten cents a pop on Jolly Rancher candies at my small town news stand. Those hard little rectangles (especially the watermelon flavor) were a favorite among me and my elementary school crowd. I still love a good Jolly Rancher today. When I saw these Jolly Rancher Fruit Chews at the Five Below store near me, I thought I’d give them a shot.

The box is a compact size so it’ll fit easily in your purse or pocket should you desire to bring them with you everywhere. There are only four flavors: blue raspberry, watermelon, green apple and cherry. I had an overabundance of blue raspberry in my box but thankfully I did have at least one of each flavor in there to give a good review.

Each piece is a small rectangle, about ¾ of an inch long. These are a real easy candy to chew. The only other candy I could really compare these too are Starburst, but these are much softer and easier to chew. They’re more of that powdery type of chewy candy rather than a taffy type of chewiness. Jolly Rancher Fruit Chews are a quick easy chew, but they’re packed with flavor.

The blue raspberry pieces are bright blue and have that distinct blue raspberry taste. The candy is not sour but rather a true basic blue raspberry, a little tart mixed with sweet. The watermelon is a deep pink colored candy and is that watermelon flavor I loved as a kid. The green apple is a bright, neon green color and the flavor is a good basic apple flavor, not a green apple in particular. The cherry is a good red color and the flavor is a basic candy cherry flavor. These are not a true fruit flavor but more like what you would expect a fruit flavor candy to be like. It’s that almost “too good to be true” taste. I wish fruit really tasted like these Jolly Ranchers.

I’m always a bit skeptical when a candy company tries to come up with a new product based on an old one. I’m an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” type of girl. But, these fruit chews are honestly really good. The flavors stay 100% true to the classic Jolly Rancher hard candy I loved as a kid. Each time I ate a piece it took me back to the good old days.

Baby Phat Review & Giveaway [20 Prizes!]

A few months ago I was lucky enough to be sent a gorgeous maxi dress from BabyPhat to review for College Candy, so I was super-excited when BabyPhat asked me to review some items from their Spring/Summer 2011 range. They sent me a selection of cute tank tops, perfect for summer, ranging in style from cute, daytime tops to sparkly evening wear. Each top is fun and wearable, with key summer trends  — perfectly for looking stylish in the sun! And after you read my review (or cheat and just scroll down) you can enter to win one of these super cute items for yourself.

The first top I tried was the gorgeous crocheted tank top. I’ve never worn anything crocheted before, but it was a hot trend for this season that I’ve been anxious to try. A word of warning though — layers are key with this look. Crochet on its own can be almost completely see-through, so make sure you wear a tank underneath. For this look I decided to go for a festival inspired look, pairing the top (with a white tank underneath!!) with white shorts, ankle boots, a leather vest and lots of jewelery. The top can be worn as a dress, too, depending on your height, but for me at 5’5”, I was just a little too tall to pull it off as a dress without bearing my butt cheeks.

Another comment too was that as a curvy girl, I needed to add a belt for some extra definition in this top, but if you’re naturally slim the loose cut would look fab on you.

crocheted top/denim jacket/floral shorts/oxfords/boater hat

For extra wardrobe-mileage (because who can afford to buy something they can’t remix?), this top would also look great with a floral skirt or shorts, denim jacket and boater hat.

The second top was undoubtedly my favourite. Yellow and stripes? Yes please! Stripes were really big this season, and went outside of simply black and white. This top was also a little more fitted which flattered my curves much more. It has a bit of an unusual back, though, so chose your bra wisely. A racerback, strapless, or stick-on bra is probably the best for this top. I kept it simple with a grey bandage skirt and belt.

tank/baseball jacket/denim shorts/converse

This top would also look great paired with sports-luxe pieces, a huge trend this season. Pair it with converse, denim shorts and a baseball jacket for sportswear cool.

Now, the third top presented me with a big of a challenge. Hanky hem tops look great on tall skinny girls, but on me look distinctively tent-like. I tried a belt, but it didn’t really work, and I panicked over how to style the top so it was more my style. Crop-tops were a huge trend this season, and paired with high-waisted shorts or skirts they were great for those of use who could use a few (thousand) more ab crunches to bare our midriffs. I decided to take both ends of the hanky hem and tie it, voilà- crop top!! I paired it with little denim shorts and sandals — a perfect beach outfit.

floral top/jeans/heels/clutch

If you’re fortunate enough to have the shape to pull off a hanky hem, this top would look great with light wash skinny jeans and nude heels.

Finally, the jewel detailed tank top. This proved to be the most difficult of all to style. Originally mistaking it for black, I found the brown difficult to fit in with the rest of my wardrobe, and the gathering at the bottom of the top made my already generous hips look as though I’d recently given birth to triplets. I cursed my curves and floundered. I tried tucking it into skirts, shorts, anything, but couldn’t make it work. Then finally, in a desperate attempt to make it work, I paired it with camel shorts. Perfect. The light material of the shorts allowed the top to lie right, without giving me monster hips, and adding wedges elongated my legs. I grew to like it’s non-fitted style (I am a slave to belts) and am excited to find new ways to style it. If you’re blessed with slim hips, this will give you wonderful curves.

similar top/jeans/red heels/clutch/earrings

Pair with dark-wash skinnies and bright red heels for a gorgeous evening look. Plus, the detailing on the top means you don’t need to add jewellery to look perfectly polished.

BabyPhat has everything you need for summer, from day-time tanks and shorts, to gorgeous evening dresses. These tops are perfect for my summer wardrobe and into fall (and we’re thrilled to see they’re still available online). And that’s why College Candy is giving away TWENTY items of their clothing to TWENTY winners. Can you believe it? I almost can’t. Here’s what we’re giving away: crochet tank (see photo #1), slashed back striped tank (see photo #2), floral handkerchief tank (see photo #3), olive bubble top (see photo #4),

College Candy

chuao firecracker chocolateWhile perusing my local big blue box store’s chocolate aisle, I noticed several bars of chocolate in intriguing-sounding flavors, like this one: a bar called “Firecracker.” Candy Addict is no stranger to Chuao Chocolatiers, the gourmet chocolate company that uses Venezuelan cacao and exciting flavor combinations that impress and delight fans of chocolate. Speaking of exciting, if you have one of those big blue boxes (aka Wal-mart), you now have easy access to some fancy chocolate! Read on to see just how exciting this chocolate is.

With a name like “Firecracker,” you would assume the marketing team just chose a word that sounded exciting to make you think their chocolate bar was also exciting. Turns out, Firecracker is the perfect way to describe this chocolate! No, there aren’t literal fireworks, but the closest thing you can get and still ingest it: popping candy. The bar also boasts dark chocolate, chipotle, and salt.

So imagine if you will: a smooth bar of dark chocolate. You bite into it and taste an above average chocolate flavor, and then you’re hit with the warming sensation of chipotle pepper (it’s not overwhelmingly spicy in this bar, but rather subtle). Your tongue next detects that this candy is slightly salty, and then *POP* goes the popping candy. The popping distracts you for several seconds, and then you remember there are other things for you to taste here. You will yourself to ignore the popping and focus on the salty chocolate flavor.

Mmm, it’s pretty good!

Verdict: This candy bar is definitely worth a try. It’s tasty, and highly entertaining. Definitely a good one to share with friends.

Pros: Lots going on, something for everyone, good amount of spiciness and salt, the entertainment of popping candy in your chocolate. Non-GMO ingredients.

Cons: These cost a bit less than , so they are high on the spendy scale. Depending on your personality type, there might be too much going on in one bar of chocolate.

Candy Review: Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa Bars

Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa Bars

I’m a huge fan of Lindt chocolates. I could eat Lindt chocolate all day long if I could. There used to be a Lindt outlet store near my home when I lived in Virginia and I used to stock up there once a month. So, I gladly “volunteered” to review these three Lindt chocolate bars that Candy Addict was sent. All three of these bars are made with 70% cocoa, which basically means that they are 70% dark chocolate and 30% other delectable ingredients.

70% Cocoa

This bar is the “plain” version in the bunch. In my opinion, this is probably one of Lindt’s best chocolate bars. I’m a dark chocolate fan, something I inherited from my Mother and luckily did not pass on to my kids (no sharing!). This bar has a nice smooth texture and just melts in your mouth. It’s not bitter like some dark chocolate bars. The 70% Cocoa chocolate bar is sweet and easy going. Even if you’re not a dark chocolate fan, I think you’ll enjoy this bar and appreciate its flavor.

70% Cocoa with Almond Brittle

I’ve had the Lindt Toffee bar before, the one with the Milk Chocolate and full of toffee bits so I figured this might be the dark chocolate version. The Almond Brittle is scattered throughout the bar and is not as prevalent as the toffee bits are in the other bar. The texture is smooth and you get the crunch of the almond brittle every now and then. The only downside (if there is a downside to any Lindt chocolate) is that the dark chocolate overwhelms this chocolate bar. The dark chocolate and the almond brittle almost work against each other rather than together. I would love there to be a lot more of the almond brittle mixed in with the chocolate so that there’s the joining of the flavors, each complementing the other. Instead you get the great flavor of the 70%, but with a little crunch.

70% Cocoa Nut Crunch

I really have the same opinion about this Nut Crunch bar as I do for the Almond Brittle bar. There are really not enough of the nuts (caramelized walnuts and hazelnuts) to even out the flavor. The nuts give a slight crunchiness to the bar but the dark chocolate flavor just takes control taste wise. As with the Almond Brittle bar, when I bite into this chocolate bar, all I taste it the dark chocolate with a little crunchiness. There needs to be more of the caramelized nuts added to tone down the 70% cocoa and so that the flavors complement each other.

As much as I love dark chocolate, I will just stick to the plain 70% Cocoa bar. The Almond Brittle and the Nut Crunch bars are honestly lacking in any other flavor other than the chocolate. The additions just add a small amount of crunch and truly no flavor. I was slightly disappointed, but still consider Lindt one of my favorite chocolate makers.

Candy Review: Brach’s Sugar Free Lemon Drops

Brach's Sugar Free Lemon Drops

I was excited review the Brach’s Sugar Free Lemon Drops. Lemon drops aren’t really a sexy candy to review. But it’s a hard and sour candy – both of which are right up my alley.

I liked that the candies are individually wrapped. That’s helpful for grabbing a few and dropping them into your purse/pocket/lunchbox.

In the end, it’s a good lemon drop. It’s not as good as a full-fledged made-with-real-sugar lemon drop. But it’s got quite a bit of flavor. I missed the sparkly sugar coating that you get on some lemon drops. But I guess an isomalt coating wouldn’t have been a hit either.

Wait, what’s that? Isomalt? Yeah, the first ingredient of the drops is isomalt with a little asterisk. The asterisk says, “Excessive comsumption may have a laxative effect” which promptly sent me on a bit of research. According to wikipedia, “Isomalt is a sugar substitute, a type of sugar alcohol, used primarily for its sugar-like physical properties. It has only a small impact on blood sugar levels and does not promote tooth decay. It has… half the calories of sugars. However, like most sugar alcohols, it carries a risk of gastric distress, including flatulence and diarrhea, when consumed in large quantities.”

Candy Review: Gimbal’s Sour Lovers

Gimbal's Sour Lovers Candy

I’m just going to come out and say it, Gimbal’s Sour Lovers Mix is the absolute BEST sour candy I have ever had! I’ve never had any Gimbal’s candy before and honestly I had never heard of them before I got this bag of goodness. I sure do know about Gimbal’s Candy now! They are so good that I let my husband have a few and from his reaction, I had to hide the bag in order to have enough for me to write this review. It was tough.

These sour gummy candies are shaped like hearts and come in 12 flavors: Meyer Lemon, Grapefruit, Pomegranate, Fuji Apple, Watermelon, Tangerine, Margarita, Blueberry, Mango, Strawberry Daiquiri, Mango, Bing cherry and Georgia Peach.

The best thing about these is not only the flavors (which are phenomenal), but the fact that they aren’t just sour on the outside; they are also sour on the inside. I noticed this when I sucked off the outer sour coating and figured out that the gummy in my mouth was still sour. It was confirmed when I visited the Gimbal’s website. They actually put the sour making ingredients into the gummy mixture and then coat the gummies in the sour mixture too.

The gummy is that good, tooth-sticking kind of gummy that makes the flavors linger for so long. You get such a good long chew with these and in combination with the incredible flavors and the double sour whammy… these are a phenomenal candy that is not to be missed. I hereby award them the coveted Candy Addict Awesomely Addictive Candy Award!

Candy Review: Twin Bing

Palmer Candy Co. Twin Bing

Before biting into this candy, I did a little background checking on it. Palmer Candy Company, the mastermind behind the Twin Bing, has been around for over 130 years and the Twin Bing was concocted in 1973. They must be doing something right.

When I tear it open the cute package, the strong, delicious smell of peanut butter wafts out. Pulling out the twins, it’s two mounds that connect to form one “bar.” I’m not gonna lie… it looks a little gross. Growing up, my mom made cookies with oatmeal, peanut butter, and cocoa powder officially called “No Bake Cookies” — lovingly nicknamed “Cow Piles.”

The Twin Bing definitely has the cow pile look. Don’t get me wrong, we loved Mom’s Cow Piles. Gross-looking does not equal gross-tasting and that is exactly the case with the Twin Bings. It’s a rich, scrumptious candy and not at all what I expected. I was expecting something like a cherry cordial, of which I’m not extraordinarily fond. A Twin Bing is not like a cordial at all. It’s a chocolate and peanut-filled shell covering a creamy cherry filling.

I definitely tasted chocolate and peanut butter right away. I didn’t taste the cherry in the first bite, but once I got to it in the middle of the first twin, it was distinctly, bitingly cherry. The packaging claims it is a “nutty chocolaty cherry treat” and without a doubt it is.

It’s curious that the ingredients don’t actually include cherries, cherry extract, imitation cherry, or anything cherry-related. There was “natural and artificial flavors.” I guess that’s the cherry part. Whatever is making the cherry flavor, it works.

Would I buy Twin Bing again? Without a doubt. It was tasty and different, and I enjoyed it. In addition to the taste, I’d like to have some on hand for the novelty. Imagine serving these the mounds of gross-looking deliciousness as dessert to dinner guests.
